On this day, Brian Lara made history, while it was also the day that Bjorn Borg and Tommie Smith were born.
Lara’s world record
It was on this day in 1994 that legendary West Indian batsman Brian Lara scored a world record 501 not out.
Lara achieved the incredible feat while representing Warwickshire in their County Championship match against Durham.
Lara struggled early on in his innings and was even dropped by Durham wicketkeeper Chris Scott on 18 before using his good fortune to his advantage.
Borg born today
On June 6, 1956, one of tennis’ greatest players, Bjorn Borg, was born. The former world number one claimed six titles at Roland Garros and five consecutive Wimbledon titles from 1976 to 1980. Despite all his success and 11 grand slam titles under his belt, the Swede retired at the age of 26 in 1983. He did come out of retirement in 1991, but failed to have the same kind of impact.
Birthday of Black Power athlete
It was also on this day in 1944 that USA 200 metre gold medalist Tommie Smith was born. Smith won gold at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City and his Black Power salute while standing on the podium has gone down as one of the most iconic images in sporting history.
