Mets, Giants win in MLB

The New York Mets completed a rare 1-3-1 putout in the defensive play of the game as they beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-5 in a 13-inning marathon at Citi Field.

The circus play occurred in the 10th inning as the Jeff Francoeur deflected off Carlos Torres' foot towards first base. Daniel Murphy managed to stop the ball, but was on the floor struggling to gather.

The first-baseman somehow managed to shovel to ball to Torres as the pitcher's foot hit the bag to get the out and stun Francoeur.

It was the highlight play of the game as the Mets rallied from five runs down with three home runs, before winning the game in an error strewn 13th inning from the Phillies.

Daniel Murphy drove in two runs of a line-drive double, before advancing to third on a throwing error from Philadelphia shortstop Freddy Galvis.

Murphy then made it home off a Hector Neris pitching error to David Wright, Wright then scored himself off a Michael Conforto single to end the game.

Over at Nationals Park, a diving catch from Anthony Rendon robbed Jedd Gyorko of a hit to preserve the Washington Nationals' two-run lead and helped them to a 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

Rendon reacted with lightning speed to catch the ground-ball at third-base, before ripping it across the diamond for the out at first.

Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth led the way offensively for the Nats as they each homered in the sixth and seventh innings respectively.

Delino DeShields scored a three-run Little League homer in the seventh-inning to help the Texas Rangers snap the Toronto Blue Jays' five-game winning run with a 4-1 triumph.

DeShields hit a sharp grounder to right-field with runners on first and second, but a costly error from Jose Bautista allowed Hanser Alberto, Bobby Wilson and DeShields to score on what should have been a single.

Mitch Moreland scored DeShields in the first inning to give the Rangers an early lead, while the Blue Jays struggled offensively and Edwin Encarnacion double in the top eighth.

The St Louis Cardinals completed a four-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 5-3 win on Thursday off the back of an impressive pitching performance from Carlos Martinez.

Martinez had a minor blip in the second as Jake Lamb drove in a run with a single, before Ender Inciarte tied the game with a two-run single.

However, he went on to retire the next 13 batters he faced as Brandon Moss hit his first homer for the Cardinals and back-up catcher Tony Cruz scored his first home run of the season.

Pedro Alvarez crushed a long-distance solo shot in the fourth inning, an eventual game winner, to add to a Neil Walker sacrifice fly in the second to help the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 win over the Miami Marlins.

Derek Dietrich scored Martin Prado on a sac-fly in the seventh for the Marlins' only run of the game.
