Despite spirited resistance from their opponents, with Rafael Ortega bludgeoning a three-run dinger for his first career homer, Texas managed to get over the line in an entertaining encounter.

The Chicago Cubs claimed back-to-back wins over St Louis as a six-run second inning helped them edge out the Cardinals 9-8.

Steven Matz won his seventh consecutive start by allowing just four hits across eight innings while David Wright's homer and Rene Rivera's RBI single helped the New York Mets to a 2-0 victory over the Washington Nationals.

Russell Martin plundered his first two homers of the season against former club the New York Yankees, whose six-game winning buzz was halted by an 8-4 defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jonathan Villar's sacrifice fly in the fifth and an RBI single in the 13th helped the Milwaukee Brewers squeeze past the Atlanta Braves 3-2, while Jackie Bradley Jr's hitting streak progressed to 29 games with a one-out single as the Boston Red Sox comfortably saw off the Colorado Rockies 10-3.

Brandon Crawford's walk-off single in the 10th secured the San Francisco Giants a fifth win in a row as they narrowly beat the San Diego Padres 4-3, while the Cincinnati Reds suffered their 10th successive loss after going down 3-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Miguel Sano's go-ahead homer saw the Minnesota Twins snatch a 7-5 success against the Kansas City Royals, homers from Odubel Herrera and Peter Bourjos helped the Philadelphia Phillies down the Detroit Tigers 8-5 and Luis Valbuena's solo smash earned the Houston Astros a narrow 4-3 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles.

The Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago White Sox by the same scoreline, as did the Miami Marlins over the Tampa Bay Rays, while the Pittsburgh Pirates got past the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 and the Seattle Mariners thrashed the Oakland Athletics 13-3.
