Sharks reach maiden Stanley Cup final

The San Jose Sharks made history by advancing to their maiden Stanley Cup final after clinching the Western Conference title with a 5-2 triumph over the St Louis Blues in game six of the series on Wednesday night.

Founded in 1991, the Sharks had never advanced to ice hockey's showpiece event but Joel Ward's goals in the second and third period after captain Joe Pavelski's early opener set them on their way to sealing a 4-2 series success.

Joonas Donskoi's strike put them 4-0 ahead on the night and although Vladimir Tarasenko reduced the deficit to two, St Louis never threatened a comeback and Logan Couture scored an empty-net goal to seal a monumental win for San Jose.
