Yankees close gap to Blue Jays

The New York Yankees closed the gap to AL East leaders the Toronto Blue Jays to just half-a-game following their win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Alex Rodriguez, John Ryan Murphy and Greg Murphy all homered as the Yanks beat the Orioles 8-6, while the Blue Jays were on the wrong end of a 11-4 hammering against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox were in fine form offensively, Jackie Bradley Jr particularly so as went 4-for-4 at the plate, hitting a two-run home run and driving in four RBIs.

In the National League, the Chicago Cubs closed in on a post-season berth as they drew to within two games of the Pittsburgh Pirates for the top NL Wild Card spot following a 9-0 smashing of the St. Louis Cardinals.

In his first start since spraining his right ankle, Lance Lynn was hit for six runs as he lasted just 2 1/3 innings on the mound.

Dexter Fowler crushed a leadoff homer and drove in three RBIs, while Addison Russell smacked a three-run shot, while Dan Haren pitched seven shutout innings to tighten the Cubs' grip on the second NL Wild Card spot.

There was another shutout at Safeco Field as the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 3-0 and close the gap the American League West leaders Houston Astros to just two games.

Yovani Gallardo threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings for his fifth win on the season, while Adrian Beltre hit a clutch two-run single, before Rougned Odor scored on a wild pitch from Rob Rasmussen in the seventh.

Over at Angel Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers extended their National League West lead to 8 1/2 games over the San Francisco Giants following a 7-5 win against the LA Angels.

Scott van Slyke lead the way for the Dodgers offensively, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs, while Zack Greinke allowed just three runs and a pair of homers in six innings on the mound.
