In-form Cubs hit Pirates for six

The Chicago Cubs continued their fine form to see off the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2 in MLB's National League Central on Wednesday night.

Jon Lester held the Pirates scoreless for more than five innings and Ben Zobrist ripped a three-run homer as the Cubs, on the back of their best start to a season in more than 100 years, wrapped up a three-game sweep of the hosts at PNC Park.

The Minnesota Twins were no match for the Houston Astros, going down 16-4, while a six-run first inning set the Washington Capitals up for another one-sided win – 13-2 over the Kansas City Royals.

Colorado's Tyler Chatwood tossed eight scoreless frames against San Diego to seal a 2-0 Rockies success which prevented the Padres sweeping the three-game series.

The New York Yankees snapped a six-game losing streak in style with a 7-0 defeat of the Baltimore Orioles, while Russell Martin hit a deep single as the Toronto Blue Jays walked off against the Texas Rangers for the second successive night, 4-3.

Steve Pearce's three-run homer paved the way for an 8-5 Tampa Bay Rays win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, while the Chicago White Sox had a two-run opener but that was as good as it got in a 5-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

Less than a day after the New York Mets mustered one hit in a loss to the Atlanta Braves, they saw them off 8-0, while the Cleveland Indians blanked the Detroit Tigers 4-0.

The Miami Marlins edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3, while the Seattle v Oakland contest was equally tight, with the Mariners winning a see-saw game 9-8.

Elsewhere, the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Francisco Giants 7-4, the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 7-3 and the St Louis Blues Cardinals edged the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4.
