Cowboys edge out Redskins

Dan Bailey kicked a 54-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining to cap a wild finish to an otherwise poor game as the Dallas Cowboys beat the Washington Redskins 19-16 on Monday night.

Bailey made the winning kick after Lucky Whitehead had returned a kick-off 45 yards to the Dallas 43 and after two completions from Matt Cassell, the Cowboys were just about in range to seal the win.

Washington's DeSean Jackson enjoyed an eventful finale to the game, fumbling a punt return with 1:26 remaining to hand the ball back to the Cowboys on the Redskins' 15. Two plays later, Darren McFadden scored from six yards out to give Dallas a 16-9 lead.

But he recovered to haul in a fine floated pass from Kirk Cousins from 28 yards to level the scores, only for Bailey to have the final say.

It had been drab stuff until then, with the teams tied 3-3 at half-time and 6-6 after three-quarters. The teams combined for just two first downs and 43 yards of offence during an inept first quarter.

The defeat ended Washington's five-game home winning streak as they dropped into a first-play tie with the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants in the NFC East.

Cassel finished the game 16-22 for 222 yards while Cousins completed 22 of 31 passes for 219 and a touchdown.
