The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Wednesday night to boost their hopes of earning a wildcard to the NHL play-offs.
Alex Ovechkin and Brayden Schenn had exchanged goals in the third period and a goalless additional five minutes meant that it went to a shootout, with goals from Nick Cousins and Sam Gagner earning the win for the Flyers.
The Ottawa Senators will be playing no part in the post season, though, as a result of that win for the Flyers.
The Senators held up their end of the bargain with a 2-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets, but they can no longer snatch a wildcard.
A blistering first 25 minutes laid the foundations for an emphatic 8-3 victory for the Anaheim Ducks against the Calgary Flames.
The Ducks found themselves 5-0 up just five minutes into the second period and they made hay from there.
The Flames did offer some resistance, adding three goals in a second period that saw the puck cross the line seven times.
