The New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabthia will miss the postseason after announcing that he would be entering a rehabilitation program for alcohol-related issues.
The Yankees are preparing for their American League Wild Card Game on Tuesday, which could set up a five-game AL Division Series against the Kansas City Royals.
The Pinstripers will now have to deal without the pitcher, who would have been expected to start one or two games in a potential series against the Royals.
Sebathia's struggles with alcohol have not been well documented, though there were reports that the pitcher got into a fight outside a Toronto night club.
In a heartfelt statement released on Monday, Sebathia said: "Today I am checking myself into an alcohol rehabilitation center to receive the professional care and assistance needed to treat my disease.
"I am looking forward to being out on the field with my team next season playing the game that brings me so much happiness."
