Yulimar Rojas easily won the women’s triple jump at the World Indoor Athletics championships on Saturday.
The only gold medal handed out in Saturday’s morning session at the Oregon Convention Centre was claimed by the 20-year-old Venezuelan, who despite fouling on five of her six jumps, managed to clear an impressive 14.41m on the jump she did land.
That was 11cm further than Germany’s Kristin Gierisch, who won silver, and a further 15cm farther than Greece’s Paraskevi Papahristou in bronze.
The mark was still some ways off her season’s best, however, a world-leading indoor mark of 14.69 in Madrid in January.
In other results, the United States 4x400m relay team qualified for Sunday’s final with the fastest time, ahead of Jamaica and surprise package Belgium.
