Athletes behaving weirdly

Being a professional athlete is usually pretty serious business, requiring years of focus, training and dedication, but the sports world also attracts its fair share of strange characters.

1. Tino Asprilla riding a horse while wearing a T-Rex outfit

Former Colombian international Faustino Hernán “Tino” Asprilla Hinestroza achieved cult status amongst supporters during his time in England playing for Newcastle United – and it’s not hard to see why.

Perhaps the video above should not be surprising, coming from a man who announced in 2014 that he was preparing to launch a range of flavoured condoms in his native Colombia.

2. Chris Bosh’s unusual sales pitch

Back in 2007, NBA star Chris shot this pretty unusual video, urging fans to vote for his inclusion in the 2008 NBA All-Star game.

Bosh channels his inner sleazy car salesman as he urges fans to get behind him. He gets extra points for that terrible southern drawl.

“I wanted to do something different, I noticed that I was behind in the polls,” he said at the time.

3. Mike Tyson vs the media

At the height of his fame, heavyweight Mike Tyson always seemed like a loose cannon ready to explode.

Over the course of his boxing career, the former champ assembled probably the strangest collections of quotes of any professional sportsman in history. You simply never knew what he was going to say next.

4. Stephon Marbury eats Vaseline

Stephon Marbury was a 2001 and 2003 All-Star who played for as many as five NBA teams over the course of his career.

While he was always a bit odd, in 2009, Marbury made the decision to broadcast his life 24/7 on a livestream website for an entire year – highlights of which include the video above, where he decides to eat an entire jar of Vaseline.

Marbury moved to China in 2010, where he still plays for the Beijing Ducks. He’s so popular in his new home that he’s been immortalised with a statue, a postage stamp and even his own museum.

5. Dennis Rodman being Dennis Rodman

When it comes to strange and bizarre behaviour, no other athlete has anything on Dennis Rodman.

A key member of Michael Jordan’s championship-winning Chicago Bulls team during the 90s, Rodman tended to draw just as many headlines for his bizarre behaviour off the court as his superb skills on it.

Highlights included wearing a wedding dress (while declaring he was bisexual and that he intended to marry himself) and promoting a book signing by emerging from a coffin – but that’s just the tip of a very weird iceberg.
