“It’s on me.”
This is how La Salle team captain Kim Fajardo owned up to the surprise early loss they suffered from the hands of NU in the first round of the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament.
The Lady Spikers, who were favorites to win the tussle, came into the match Wednesday with not enough grit right from first frame which led to an uninspired performance as the Lady Bulldogs came away with the four-set victory.
Though Fajardo finished with 39 excellent sets, she still thinks it was her fault.
“For me lang, ang laki ng pagkukulang ko last game. Hindi ko man maisa-isa ‘yun, feeling ko sa akin talaga,” she told FOX Sports a day after the loss.
“Maybe hindi ko nagawa ng maayos ‘yung trabaho ko as a setter o captain kasi kung nagawa ko ‘yun baka iba naging result ng game,” added the veteran.
Having blown hot and cold so far, the erratic level of play of La Salle has shown a chink in the team’s armour which was taken advantage of by NU’s power trio in Jorelle Singh, Jaja Santiago and Myla Pablo, who all scored 16 points apiece in the match.
Talking about her team’s inconsistency, Fajardo says, “Sa sarili na din namin ‘yun kung bakit ganun ang laro namin. ‘Yun naman ang tinatrabaho namin and hopefully magawa namin.”
One good takeaway from the Taft squad’s 2-1 record so far, though, is the solid performance of Majoy Baron, who waxed hot with 19 points.
Being the positive soul that she is, Fajardo says there is a way for them to still benefit from the heartbreaking loss.
“‘Yun siguro ‘yung way ni Lord para sabihin sa amin na kulang pa. Reminder siya para as early as now maayos namin kung ano pa ‘yung mga dapat i-adjust,” shared the skipper.
From this point on, the character of last year’s runners-up will be put to a test as they try to bounce back from the loss and bring back their dominance in the collegiate ranks.
And if Fajardo can have it her way, she would like to forget the defeat but bring forward the pain to remind herself how she does not want to be in the same position again.
“‘Yung result ng game kahapon, for me, dapat kalimutan na,” she declared. “Pero ‘yung sakit at bigat ng nararamdaman namin siguro pwedeng gamitin namin ‘yun para sabihin sa sarili namin na ayaw na namin ulit maramdaman ‘yun.”
“Dun sa nangyari, mas malalaman and makikilala namin sarili namin kung paano ba kami lumaban o bumawi sa talo. Learn from it and move on,” added the Season 76 best setter awardee.
