FEU coach Shaq delos Santos is happy how his Lady Tamaraws fared against defending champion Ateneo, but rued their “diesel-like” start Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Morayta squad fell behind 1-11 in the opening set, but made a game out of it before succumbing to the Lady Eagles, 22-25, 19-25, 15-25 in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament.
“Sabi ko yung kinarga nilang krudo ay diesel,” he said. “Yung maturity ng whole team namin kulang.”
Playing without star gunner Bernadeth Pons and battling a team that has won 20 straight matches, Delos Santos just had the right amount of expectations from his players.
FEU lived up to it and gave Ateneo some chills, especially in the 1st set, but that was pretty much it as the Lady Eagles wrapped it up in 3.
This Delos Santos attributed to being rattled playing the powerhouse Katipunan team.
“Hindi dahil Ateneo kalaban mag-give up ka na. (Yung importante) ay yung paano ka lumaban talaga,” he said.
“Pero I think na-intimidate sila. Honestly speaking, bata pa talaga yung team namin eh. Meron kaming seniors, pero dalawa lang,” Delos Santos further explained while adding the need to learn how to adjust to their opponents in the course of a game.
“Kailangan mag-adjust sila dahan dahan para pagdating ng second set, alam na nila yung gagawin nila. Nakuha naman nila nung first set, kaso hindi lang talaga sila ganoon ka consistent,” he said. — By Arylle Magtalas
