UST coach Odjie Mamon blasts Tigers for resisting instructions

After getting crushed by Ateneo in their 1st game, UST was were eager to get a win coming into their matchup against UP in the UAAP Season 78 men’s volleyball tournament Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

However, the Tiger Spikers squad failed to release this eagerness when the Fighting Maroons team took the opening set and eventually the match, 17-25, 25-22, 19-25, 21-25.

UST coach, Odjie Mamon, explained what happened to his team.

“Not good. Not good at all. Resistant sa instructions ‘yung mga players. I was giving them specific instructions, pero yung execution, malayong malayo,” he said.

The Tiger Spikers prepared for their match against UP, especially devising a plan to stop rising star Wendel Miguel.

“We have scouting video. The heavy factor dyan na pinaghandaan namin is Miguel,” Mamon admitted.

He added he was disappointed with the performance of his team, especially his seniors.

“I was thrown off from the start, nasira yung diskarte namin. But I was put off especially sa performance ng seniors. Si Sarabia at yung setter (Castillo)”.

UST committed 40 unforced errors that contributed heavily to their defeat. The Maroons, meanwhile, had just 22 miscues.

“That’s almost a set and a half. Yung errors nakakasira ng momentum. We were playing catch up, pero puro error naman,” Mamon stressed, but added he’s still positive they will break through soon.

“One day at a time, one game at a time. We will have a break tomorrow, because it’s been 3 weeks that the players have been training,” he said.  – By Arylle Magtalas
