Toews strike seals overtime win for Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Arizona Coyotes 5-4 in the NHL on Thursday night thanks to a Jonathan Toews strike in the final 30 seconds of overtime.

Toews, who had earlier scored in the second period, bagged his league-high fifth overtime strike of the season after a topsy-turvy game ended 4-4 after the regulation three periods.

Alex Ochevkin won it for the Washington Capitals with less than three minutes remaining as his late goal earned a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders in a battle of leading teams from the Metropolitan Conference.

Josh Bailey had scored early in the third period for the Islanders to level it at 2-2 before Ochevkin had the final say with overtime looming.

The Florida Panthers enjoyed a high-scoring 6-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Vincent Trocheck scored twice and Jaromir Jagr added a goal and two assists as the Panthers made it five wins on the bounce.

The Edmonton Oilers founds their goalscoring form again with a 7-2 rout of the Ottawa Senators.

Two goals from Jordan Eberle helped the Oilers to a 3-0 lead after 11 minutes and after the Senators had brought it back to 4-2 at the end of the second period a further three goals in the final 20 minutes put the Senators to the sword.

Warne Simmonds and Claude Giroux scored two apiece as the Philadelphia Flyers enjoyed a 6-3 success over the Nashville Predators while the San Jose Sharks beat the St Louis Blues 3-1.

Pierre-Alexandre Parenteu's shootout goal gave the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils while the New York Rangers battled back from 2-0 down to beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2.

The Boston Bruins earned a 3-2 shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres, the Dallas Stars enjoyed a 4-3 success over the Colorado Avalanche, the Anaheim Ducks beat the LA Kings 4-2 and the Columbus Blue Jackets were 2-1 victors over the Vancouver Canucks.
