‘Cherry bomb’ explodes for UST as Rondina nets 30

She first made her name as a beach volleyball champion. Then, she saw her popularity rise by being UST’s spark plug.

Now, Cherry Rondina showed she can be the Golden Tigresses’ next game-changer.

The Cebuano dynamite scored 30 points off 25 massive hits, 3 aces and 2 blocks against Adamson on Wednesday, but her efforts proved to be in vain as UST fell in 5 sets.

“It was nice. It was really nice,” she said in Filipino. “Even after losing the first two sets, we were able to redeem ourselves in the third and fourth.”

Throughout the match, Rondina didn’t show any sign of fear and discouragement, saying her confidence partly came from Pam Lastimosa, who is out for the season due to a torn ACL.

“I’m doing this for Pam, because it is her position in the first place. I think that Pam’s fighting spirit was passed on to me, that’s why my game is for her,” she said.

Rondina also admitted that she is constantly motivated by coach Kung Fu Reyes.

“I just commit myself to the game. Coach would always say that once we step in the court, we have to give our full confidence,” she said.

Even after their heartbreaking loss, Rondina admits that the 5-setter boosted their confidence.

“We realized that we can give the other teams a good game and even beat them,” she said. “Our coach told us that we just need a little more push in order to win, which I believe is to be able to boost our self-confidence.” — By Arylle Magtalas
