After losing most of its veteran core, National University opened its UAAP Season 78 men’s volleyball campaign with aplomb, sweeping Adamson University in straight sets Wednesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
And while setter Vince Mangulabnan remained stellar for the Bulldogs, it was rookie Ricky Marcos who made a statement for the Sampaloc spikers in his UAAP debut.
“There was a lot of pressure because this was my first UAAP (game), and this was my dream,” he told FOX Sports in Filipino.
Facing a highly-favored Falcons side, NU banked on Marcos’ reception and Mangulabnan’s setting to fire 33 hits in just 3 sets.
“Our coach constantly reminded us to think of this as if it’s a tune-up game in order for us for us to enjoy,” he added. “We were able to do that during the third set.”
The result was an astounding debut for the Bulldogs, who lost top attackers Peter Torres, Berlin Paglinawan and Reuben Inaudito to graduation. — By Arylle Magtalas
