Atkinson strikes again; Bruins leave it late

Cam Atkinson scored a third NHL hat-trick as the Columbus Blue Jackets won 5-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens.

With just 25 seconds remaining Atkinson scored his third goal of the game and 16th of the season to complete a hat-trick to add to those against the Colorado Avalanche in 2012 and the Chicago Blackhhawks in 2015.

Brandon Saad scored twice for Columbus, Brendan Gallagher and PK Subban scoring for Montreal.

The Boston Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 with Brett Connolly scoring with 1:54 remaining.

Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand had power-play goals for the Bruins and goalie Tuukka Rask made 34 saves as the Bruins made it five wins in six to go third in the Atlantic Division.

Wayne Simmonds scored two goals for the Flyers who went to three straight defeats.

Petr Mrazek made 27 saves for the Detroit Red Wings who beat the New York Islanders 4-2.

Justin Abdelkader scored the go-ahead goal for the Red Wings who also had goals from Brad Richards, Luke Glendening and Danny DeKeyser.

Brock Nelson and Mikhail Grabovski scored for the Islanders and Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves.

Arizona Coyotes beat Minnesota Wild 2-1 with the result being decided by a shootout. Charlie Coyle gave Minnesota the lead in the third period before Antoine Vermette took the game past regulation. With no goals in overtime it came down to Anthony Duclair’s shootout winner as he had the only score.

Derick Brassard had a career-high five points as the New York Rangers defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-3 at Madison Square Garden.

The Dallas Stars won 2-1 against the Calgary Flames with second period scores from Jamie Benn and Jason Spezza. Calgary’s reply came in the third period from Joe Colborne.
