Ovechin on the brink; Sharks attack

Alex Ovechkin moved to within one goal of 500 in the NHL as his double inspired Washington Capitals to a 4-3 overtime win over New York Rangers.

Ovechkin, who had scored his first in the opening period, won it for the Capitals 1:25 into the additional five minutes.

San Jose Sharks gave Toronto Maple Leafs a torrid time as six players found the net in a 7-0 rout.

Tomas Hertl scored twice and was joined on the scoresheet by Brent Burns, Matt Nieto, Joe Pavelski, Malker Karlsson and Joonas Donski.

A three-goal third period from Arizona Coyotes gave them a 4-0 success over Nashville Predators, while Minnesota Wild saw off Dallas Stars 2-1.

Jordan Staal scored an overtime winner for Carolina Hurricanes in a 4-3 success over Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins beat Montreal Canadiens 3-1 and Ottawa Senators also needed overtime to see off Boston Bruins 2-1.

New York Islanders were humbled 4-0 on home territory by Philadelphia Flyers, Nikita Kucherov scored an overtime goal to earn Tampa Bay Lightning a 3-2 win over Vancouver Canucks, while St Louis Blues beat Los Angeles Kings 2-1 after a shoot-out.
