Sri Lanka's T20 captain Lasith Malinga has withdrawn from the upcoming two-match series against New Zealand due to injury, with Dinesh Chandimal taking over leadership duties.
Opening batsman Danushka Gunathilaka and seamer Suranga Lakmal, who are both part of the ongoing five-match ODI series against the Kiwis, will stay on for the games in the shortest format.
Malinga has still not recovered from a knee injury he sustained against the West Indies in November, and his return to full fitness is still unknown.
The news will come as blow to the Asian side as they were white-washed in the two-match Test series and have lost the first two matches in the 50-over format.
The first T20 is scheduled for 7 January in Mount Maunganui while the second game will take place three days later in Auckland.
