This year's Victor China Open in Fuzhou promises to be among the most exciting events of the BWF Super Series calendar with 224 players from 23 countries taking part.
The top seed in the men's draw is Chinese player Chen Long (currently the number two player in the world), however, the seeding might be deceptive as two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan (pictured) is unseeded in the tournament. World number three Jan O Jorgensen may prove a thorn in Dan's side, as it looks likely the two will meet in the second round.
Another match that may prove interesting will be when India's HS Prannoy, who has been in dominant form recently, faces Denmark's Viktor Axelsen in his opening match.
The women's singles draw is also looking promising with China's Li Xuerui, Wang Shixian and Wang Yihan (respectively numbers one, two and three in the world) the top seeds. Xuerui is the favourite to win, however, she may face the woman who beat her to the World title Carolina Marin.
India's Saina Nehwal will also be the topic of intense interest, having changed from her long time coach to top Indian coach Vimal Kumar. She is expected to ease past Japanese world number 15 Sayaka Takahashi; but the prospect of facing Xuerui in the quarterfinal will be weighing on her mind.
The tournament's qualifying rounds take place today (Tuesday); the quarterfinals and semi-finals take place on Friday and the final will happen on Sunday.
The event is one of the biggest on the badminton calendar, with 700 000 USD in prize money up for grabs. In addition the results help determine if players qualify for the BWF Destination Dubai World Super-series.
