Manchester United are set for a huge shake-up next season, with several stars on their way out. Among them is also a club great, who has been playing in the iconic red for the past decade. He has now posted a simple farewell message on Instagram.
Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia posted a simple message via his Instagram story, which displayed an image of Old Trafford in the background with the words ‘Thank You’ scribbled across.
Current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had already confirmed Valencia’s departure during a press conference when he was quizzed about his captain choices for next season.
“We’ve had Antonio (Valencia), he’s going, we’ve had Ashley (Young), we’ve had Paul (Pogba), we’ve had David (de Gea), Chris (Smalling) has been captain, so there are players here who can be captain on the pitch,” he had said.
Valencia joined Manchester United back in 2009 following a successful spell at Wigan Athletic. The Ecuadorian signed a four-year contract initially and was deployed by Sir Alex Ferguson mainly on the wings.
The arrival of Louis van Gaal in 2012 saw a slight shift in Valencia’s position. The Dutchman started deploying him as right back and right full-back while asking him to contribute more defensively to the team.
He was finally made club captain by Jose Mourinho earlier this season, a position which he will remain until the end of the 2018/19 campaign, before moving on to pastures new.
