Dyche rues missed chances

The Clarets dominated for large spells, but could not find the back of the net as striker Danny Ings came closest when he struck the post.

Raheem Sterling grabbed the winner in the second half as Liverpool held off the hosts??? challenge and took their first win in four Premier League outings.

Dyche remained positive in defeat, but admitted there needs to be a time when performances translate into points.

“In the first half, I thought we were excellent. We dominated the half, and really we???ve been done by a sucker punch,??? he said.

“They picked our pocket, if I???m honest, which is a big positive to say about when Liverpool come to visit us at Turf Moor. But we don???t get any points out of that.

“We???re not na??ve – we know it???s got to end up with results, but there has to be a future in our performing. There was last week against Tottenham, there was against Southampton when I thought we were even better.

“There???s certainly a future in how we???ve performed today against those kind of players. Real positives, but as I suggest, you???ve got to get the wins and get the points on the board.

“We???re not making too many mistakes – I don???t think Tom Heaton had much to do today – but we also know we???ve got to be clinical when we???re on top of teams like that. We had enough today to go and take the game.”

One major boost for Dyche???s side was the return of Sam Vokes to first-team action for the first time since March, after a lengthy absence with a ruptured cruciate ligament.

Vokes came on for the final 10 minutes as Burnley looked for an equaliser, and Dyche said getting some competitive match time under his belt was key for his striker.

???We???re still careful with Sam – he???s still on his way back,??? he said. ???That???s a different kind of feel, that???s the idea. When the adrenaline???s flying in a real game, rather than in reserve games, it???s a different feeling, so it???s important that we???re still watching how he comes back.

“We want to make sure it???s right for him, which in turn is right for us. But it???s great to have him back ??? you saw the reaction from the fans and the players alike.”
