Iceland international Gylfi Sigurdsson delivered the goal that earned Garry Monk’s side a Boxing Day win at the Liberty Stadium.
With heavy rain falling, Sigurdsson’s free-kick narrowly escaping the clutches of Villa’s keeper Brad Guzan to record back-to-back wins for the Welsh outfit.
“I was very pleased with the players, who were fantastic,” Lambert told Sports. “I thought we deserved to take something from the game. Coming here against a team who are renowned for doing that against other teams, I thought we passed the ball really well and could have got something in the end.”
In stoppage time, Christian Benteke almost grabbed an equaliser, his header from the centre of the box only denied by good work from Lukasz Fabianski.
“It was a terrific save,” admitted Lambert. “That was a really good game of football from us and we enjoyed plenty of possession.”
And the Villa boss refused to blame goalkeeper Guzan for Sigurdsson’s winning free-kick after 13 minutes.
“I think Guz should never be blamed for the goal,” Lambert said. “He’s kept us in games before with some massive saves. I think he’s maybe taken a step to his right and he’ll be disappointed himself at losing the goal.”
