Clean sheet delights Rodgers

The hosts dominated for large spells and had the better of the opportunities in a hard-fought encounter, but Raheem Sterling???s strike ensured the Reds went back to Merseyside with all three points.

Rodgers??? side have come under increased pressure in recent weeks after suffering defensive issues which have seen them concede sloppy goals, but the Liverpool boss was far happier after securing a clean sheet.

“It was a massive three points,??? he said. “I thought it was a great performance in terms of resilience and character from the team.

“Burnley make it so difficult ??? they work from the first whistle right until the end, especially here at home.

“You???ve really got to work to get the points here. So to come here and get the victory in what was a tough game, I???m delighted for the players because they put so much into it.”

Under-fire goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has been rested in recent matches by Rodgers, but was unexpectedly called into action early on after Brad Jones went off injured.

The Belgian looked nervous, especially with the ball at his feet, with his confidence clearly shot from being dropped, but Rodgers was pleased his goalkeeper managed to help shut Burnley out.

???Brad just picked up a thigh muscle [problem],” he added. ???He felt it in the first kick, which is unfortunate, and Simon came in and kept the clean sheet which is great for us.

???Sometimes we make too many errors and give away goals cheaply, but today we had to be really resilient and defend properly. Brad, since he???s been in the team, has done well ??? Simon???s come in and continued with that.

???But, as I say, it was a tough game. Nothing but credit for the team, and obviously delighted with the three points.???
