Muguruza demolishes Sharapova in Paris

Garbine Muguruza

Garbine Muguruza was in a dominant mood as she breezed past Maria Sharapova at Roland Garros on Wednesday.

The Spaniard needed just 71 minutes on the red stuff on Court Philippe-Chatrier to roll over Sharapova 6-2, 6-1 and reach the semi-finals of the Paris event for the second time.

Muguruza put on a clinical performance to record her first win over the Russian superstar in four attempts and keep her chances of topping the world rankings next week alive

The 2016 champion enjoyed a bright start, racing to a 4-0 lead. It wasn’t without a battle though, as Sharapova saved five break points before giving away the two breaks.

While Sharapova broke Muguruza to love early in the second set, it merely cancelled out her loss of serve the game before, and the lanky Spaniard broke Sharapova the next game anyway to lead 2-1.

From there it was one-way traffic as Muguruza’s accurate and conservative play earned her another double break and the victory.

Waiting for her in the final four is the winner of the match between top seed Simona Halep and two-time grand slam winner Angelique Kerber.
