American Serena Williams looked in ominous form as she saw off 11th seed Julia Goerges of Italy in straight sets at Roland Garros on Saturday to make the Last 16 in Paris.
The 23-times grand slam winner needed just 75 five minutes on Court Suzanne-Lenglen to brush aside Goerges 6-3, 6-4 and set up a meeting with Maria Sharapova.
Goerges was reliant on her serve, adding 11 aces, but as the match progressed Williams began to read her serve to fire back more returns nullifying her opponent’s big weapon.
In the first set, The American broke to lead 3-1 thanks to a cross-court winner going on to wrap up the opening set 6-3.
In the second, Goerges dropped serve in the third game to trail 1-2 but claimed Williams’ serve the next game only to lose hers straight away to trail 2-3.
Williams then charged on to win the set and match 6-4, seemingly getting better with each match she plays.
In another result, top seed Simona Halep continued her charge towards a third Roland-Garros final when she beat Andrea Petkovic of Germany 7-5, 6-0 on Court 18 and will next face No.16 seed Elise Mertens, who beat Daria Gavrilova 6-3, 6-1.
The first set was a tough battle lasting 60 minutes which Halep eventually won 7-5 after breaking Petkovic’s serve in the 11th game and then serving out the set.
In the second, when trailing 0-1, Petkovic called for the trainer to have her right knee bandaged but never got back into the match, losing the set 6-0.
The 12th seed Angelique Kerber of Germany reached the fourth round when she defeated No.18 Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).
She next plays seventh-seeded Caroline Garcia of France, who cruised past Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1, 6-3, earlier in the day.
