Cilic, Del Potro reach Last 16 in Paris

Croatian third seed Marin Cilic and Argentinian fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro both won their matches at Roland Garros on Saturday to reach the Last 16.

Cilic was at his best beating American Steve Johnson 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 37 minutes to set up a meeting with Italian Fabio Fognini for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Croatian fired nine aces and 35 winners past Johnson who had no answer to the aggressive, attacking play he was up against.

A break in the second game gave Cilic the opening set 6-3 and followed that up with further breaks in the first and seventh games of the next set, winning it 6-2 to be firmly in charge.

In the third, Cilic never let up and though the set was a lot tighter he managed another break in the ninth game to lead 5-4 and then served out the match without dropping a point, winning it 6-4.

In another match, fifth seed Del Potro reached the fourth round by seeing off Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-5, 6-4, 6-1.

This is the first time since 2012 that the Argentinian has reached the fourth round.

The former US Open champion will face either American John Isner or Pierre-Hugues Herbert next.

Belgian David Goffin survived four match points in the fourth set to get past Gael Monfils of France 6-7(6), 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to face Marco Cecchinato of Italy next.
