With 33 Grand Slam titles to her name, 18 of which are singles titles, Williams has more Grand Slams than any other player still active on the tour. She ranks seventh on the all-time list of Grand Slam winners.
However, despite all of this experience and success, the American has revealed that she still struggles with nerves during the first round of Grand Slams.
“As always, I had the jitters going out in the first match of a Grand Slam. So, yeah, it's never super easy to be the one that everyone wants to beat. So I always have to be a little bit above. I felt okay. I definitely think I can improve a tremendous amount," she said after her first round victory over Alison Van Uytvanck.
Williams added the pressure of being the heavy favourite once more was a contributing factor to her nerves, but that she has always struggled with them.
"I just am more open to talking about it. Before I was very quiet about it. But even today I told Patrick, I'm a little nervous. He's like, It's okay. Just make sure you keep your feet moving. I'm more open about it now," she explained.
