Australian Open day 3 wrap

At the end of his match, Nadal dropped to his knees in what looked like he had won the event but it was just relief to have beaten U.S. qualifier Tim Smyczek in a five-set-thriller.

The 6-2, 3-6, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-5 win saw a dominant Nadal in the first set but things started to go wrong from there on with the number three seed looking out of sorts.

At the end of the third game of the third set he was given medication for a stomach ailment. Thereafter he seems to be struggling and looked exhausted.

In the end Nadal managed to somehow win in 4 hours, 12 minutes.

No. 2-ranked Maria Sharapova saved two match points against Russian qualifier Alexandra Panova before winning 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

Sharapova saved the two match points in the 10th game against Panova, who had never won a match in five previous Grand Slam attempts.

In the end she held her nerve to win through to the next round.

Roger Federer dropped the first set before beating Simone Bolelli 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the third round.

The Swiss superstar did look a class act as the match progressed and is looking good.

French Open finalist and third-seeded Simona Halep beat Jarmila Gajdsova 6-2, 6-2 without any trouble.

No. 7 Eugenie Bouchard beat Kiki Bertens 6-0, 6-3.

Others who won through to the next round in the women's draw were No. 10 Ekaterina Makarova, No. 21 Peng Shuai and No. 22 Karolina Pliskova.

Sixth seed Andy Murray had few problems when dispatching Melbourne's Marinko Matosevic 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

The seventh seed Tomas Berdych won with a straight sets demolition of Austrian veteran Juergen Melzer. Others that got through were No. 24 Richard Gasquet, No. 14 Kevin Anderson and No. 10 Grigor Dimitrov.

Some of the men's seeds crashed out, Marcos Baghdatis beat No. 20 David Goffin and Bernard Tomic won against No. 22 Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios beat No. 23 Ivo Karlovic in a four-set match featuring a combined 65 aces.
