Ward closes on top 100 with win

The world number 109, who gave veteran Spaniard Fernando Verdasco a real scare at the Australian Open last month, needed just over an hour to defeat home hopeful Veic 6-2 6-4 in the Croatian capital.

Ward, 27, fired three aces past his first-round opponent and saved three of four break points and will next face fifth seed Andreas Seppi of Italy.
