Almagro defeated the number two seed 6-3 7-6 (7/1) in 85 minutes to set up a clash against fifth seed Pablo Cuevas, who had easier progress as opponent Facundo Bagnis retired when trailing 5-1 in the first set.

Also on Wednesday in Sao Paulo, fourth seed Leonardo Mayer recovered from the loss of the first set to sink Albert Ramos-Vinolas 4-6 3-6 6-1 in his second round match. Next up for the 27-year-old Argentinian is a clash against either Martin Klizan or Joao Souza.
