Nadal has won 14 Grand Slam titles and he will be aiming to be the first man to win a single Major 10 times at the French Open later this year.
The 28-year-old has had a dismal start to his season following a 2014 season that was disrupted by injury and health issues. However, speaking ahead of the Rio Open Nadal said he will continue playing for as long as possible.
Tennis World USA quoted Nadal saying: "If you ask me whether I want to become the greatest of all time, my answer is obviously yes, I do, even though it is going to be very tough. I don't really know if it only depends on me and is not all lying in my hands.
"It's not something I think a lot about. At the end of my career, we will see which place I hold in the history of the sport.
"It will all depend on my physical and mental conditions. I have fun doing what I do. Playing tennis makes me happy, regardless of injuries or anything else. I want to keep on playing as long as I can."
