Second seed Ferrer defeated Dutchman Igor Sijsling 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in just under an hour and a half to advance to the second round.
Just days after winning the title in Rio, Ferrer is back in the hunt for a fourth win in Acapulco. He won the contest three years in a row, from 2010 to 2012.
The Spaniard received a warm welcome from the tournament organisers before play started, with Raul Zurutuza recognising his excellent record at the tournament. Ferrer's successes here came when it was a clay court tournament, and it appeared he struggled with the new surface at times during his victory.
He will face Australia's Marinko Matosevic in the next round.
