Radwanska ousts top seed Halep

World number one Simona Halep was knocked out of the Miami Open on Saturday by 32nd seed Agnieszka Radwanska.

Halep was stunned as her Polish opponent fought back to win 6-3, 2-6, 3-6 in one hour and 44 minutes.

The defeat means both top seeds are out of the tournament after second seed Caroline Wozniacki was ousted by Monica Puig a day earlier.

Radwanska, the 2012 Champion, will now face Victoria Azarenka in the last 32 after she defeated Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Azarenka is unseeded as she attempts to get her career back on track after a prolonged absence following the birth of her son and a protracted custody battle with the father.

Also into the last 16 was Angelique Kerber after the German defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-4, 6-4.

US Open champion Sloane Stephens was made to work for her passage into the next round against Romania’s Monica Niculescu.

Stephens dropped the first set in a tie break, but advanced when her opponent retired in the third set with the American leading 6-7(1-7), 6-3, 4-0.

Third seed Garbine Muguruza enjoyed a comfortable win over Christina McHale, the highest remaining seed dropping just three games on her way to a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
