Easy wins for Federer, Nadal; Wawrinka dumped out

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both advanced to the third round at the BNP Paribas Open, but Stanislas Wawrinka was knocked out at Indian Wells on Sunday.

Second seed Federer beat Diego Schwartzman 6-4 6-2 while third seed Nadal trounced Dutchman Igor Sijsling by the same scoreline.

Former Australian Open champion Wawrinka, this seventh seed at the California event thisweek, was dumped out by another Dutch player Robin Haase – the world numner 104 winning 6-3 3-6 6-3.

Haase, who was ranked as high as 33rd three years ago, will next face Czech 27th seed Lukas Rosol, who needed three sets to beat 4-6 6-0 6-3.

Sixth seed Milos Raonic and ninth seed Tomas Berdych were also comfortable winners – the former beating Simone Bolelli 6-3 6-4 while the latter had little trouble in overcoming Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-1 6-4.

Wawrinka wasn't the only seed to be knocked out on the day, as Ivo Karlovic (21), Richard Gasquet (22), Santiago Giraldo (29) and Jeremy Chardy (31) were all sent packing.

Karlovic's serve was in top form, hitting 18 aces in his match against Steve Johnson, but failed to produce a single break point to go down 6-3 7-6 (7-5).
Gasquet was trailing Michael Berrer 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 3-1 when he retired with a back problem.

Giraldo was knocked out 6-1 7-6 (7-4) by Alexandr Dolgopolov, while Chardy came out second best against Donald Young – the left-hander winning 6-4 6-2.

Eleventh seed Grigor Dimitrov needed all his resolve to overcome Australian upstart Nick Kyrgios, eventually coming through 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 7-6 (7-4).

In fact, the Bulgarian faced elimination in the final set when Kyrgios served for the match at 5-4, but after rolling his ankle with the score at 5-3, the Aussie was unable to see through that advantage and lost the next three games too.

In other matches involving seeded players, 15th seed Roberto Bautista Agut beat Denis Istomin 6-4 6-3 and , 30th seed Andreas Seppi defeated Victor Hanescu 6-4 6-4.

Jack Sock faced a match point in his match against Gilles Muller before winning 3-6 6-3 7-6 (9-7), 17th seed Tommy Robredo edged out Andrey Golubev6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 and 13th seed Gilles Simon overcame Malek Jaziri 6-3 4-6 6-2.
