Tsurenko one win away from defending Mexico title

Lesia Tsurenko is just one win away from successfully defending her Mexico Open title after beating third seed Daria Gavrilova in straight sets.

Tsurenko cruised through her semi-final 6-2, 6-4, in Acapulco on Friday and will now face Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele for the championship.

The seventh seed claimed her third WTA Tour title at last year’s event and her only difficulty against Gavrilova came with sealing the match.

Tsurenko was 5-0 up in the second set and allowed Gavrilova back into contention, before finally finishing her off on her seventh match point.

“It was just getting more and more tough in the second set because her defence was just amazing,” Tsurenko said.

“It was confusing for me and I made a lot of mistakes, probably because I lost some concentration. I’m really happy I finished 6-4 and not getting to a tiebreak.

“I just really like it here. I think all the conditions for the tournament are just great. I know that all the players enjoy it.”

Voegele – who knocked out number one seed Sloane Stephens in the quarter-finals – will compete in her first WTA final after beating Rebecca Peterson 6-4, 7-5.
