Cornet marches on in Katowice

Searching for her fifth title on the WTA Tour, 25-year-old Cornet of France made light work of her Dutch opponent as she claimed a 6-1 6-3 win in just over an hour in Poland.

Fourth seed Magdalena Rybarikova suffered a first-round knockout to Alison Van Uytvanck on Monday. The Belgian 21-year-old overcame her Slovakian opponent 6-2 6-3.

Russia’s Vera Zvonareva saw off another seed as she claimed a hard-fought 7-5 6-4 victory over Karin Knapp of Italy.

The former Wimbledon finalist saw off the sixth seed in just under two hours on Court One to progress.

Third seed Camila Giorgi held on to see off Denisa Allertova of the Czech Republic after winning a tough first set 7-5.

The 23-year-old Italian lost the second 6-4 before recording a 6-4 third-set win to advance in a match lasting two hours and 39 minutes.

Slovenia’s Polona Hercog was also taken to three sets before she recorded a 6-0 3-6 6-2 triumph over Misaki Doi of Japan.
