Zverev winning streak brought to a halt

Alexander Zverev’s 10-game winning streak came to an end after a surprise defeat to unseeded Francis Tiafoe at the Cincinnati Masters.

Zverev produced a shock win over Roger Federer at the Rogers Cup, in Montreal, last week to move up to seventh in the world rankings, but American teenager Tiafoe came from behind to triumph 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 in Cincinnati.

It looked as if Zverev’s recent exertions had taken their toll on the 20-year-old, who began to tire after Tiafoe opened up a 3-0 lead in the second set.

Tiafoe grew in confidence and saw out the match to secure a third round encounter against fellow American John Isner.

“It was a rollercoaster match,” said Tiafoe.

“My game plan was to keep the rallies going and keep him out there. I was hitting my shots and trying to compete hard.”

Elsewhere, Juan Martin del Potro continued his recent good form after beating American qualifier Mitchell Krueger 6-4, 6-4.

Del Potro will face Grigor Dimitrov in the third round after the Bulgarian recorded his 30th win of the year with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Feliciano Lopez.

Nick Kyrgios also advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alexandr Dolgopolov, with Ivo Karlovic next up in the last 16 for the Aussie.

In the day’s last two matches, Rafa Nadal beat Richard Gasquet while Adrian Mannarino overcame Sam Querrey.
