Serena Williams may soon be giving birth to her first child, but she is targeting an impressively fast return to the game.
In a recent interview with Vogue magazine, the 23-time Grand Slam champion revealed she aims to defend her Australian Open title in January of next year.
That would give her just three months to prepare after having her baby.
“It’s the most outrageous plan,” Williams said. “I just want to put that out there. That’s, like, three months after I give birth. I’m not walking anything back, but I’m just saying it’s pretty intense.
“If I lose and I lose again, it’s like, ‘she’s done’. Especially since I’m not 20 years old. I’ll tell you this much: I won’t win less. Either I win, or I don’t play.”
Former World No 1 Victoria Azarenka recently took a six-month break after having her first child. She gave birth on December 19, 2016, and returned to play in the Mallorca Open on June 21.
