Federer starts US Open preparations in Montreal

World number three Roger Federer has confirmed that he will be playing at the Rogers Cup in Montreal as a build-up to the US Open, which starts on August 28.

The Rogers Cup, which the 35-year-old Federer has won twice before, runs from August 6-13.

In a statement released by Tennis Canada, the Swiss 19-time grand slam winner said he was happy to be making a return to Montreal where he has not competed since 2011.

"I'm happy to be coming back to Montreal, as I have not had the chance to play there for many years," said Federer.

"This 2017 season has been very exciting and I am really looking forward to being back on the court on the ATP Tour."

Federer has had a great 2017 winning the 18th and 19th grand slam titles of his career at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, plus winning the tournaments at Indian Wells, Miami Masters and the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.

"We are celebrating today and the celebrations will continue over the next few days especially since Federer will celebrate his birthday with us on August 8," said Montreal tournament director Eugene Lapierre.
