Smooth sailing for Murray against Brown

World No 1 Andy Murray put on a show for the home fans as he dispatched Dustin Brown 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 on Wimbledon's Centre Court on Wednesday.

The defending Wimbledon champion continued to look much improved as he wrapped up the second-round victory in one hour and 38 minutes.

Germany's Brown – who famously beat Rafa Nadal on Centre Court a couple of years ago – is known for his unpredictable style of play, and did offer up a few moments of magic around the net in particular, but he was never really able to trouble his top-ranked opponent.

Murray claimed the decisive break in the first set thanks to a Brown double-fault and then went up early in the second too thanks to a classy backhand running pass.

From that point on it was all one-way traffic, as Murray won 11 of the last 13 games to set up a third-round clash with 28th seed Fabio Fognini.

The Scot had been dealing with a sore hip in the lead-up to Wimbledon, but he was given another solid work-out by Brown and appeared to come through it with flying colours.

"My hip is OK," Murray told BBC Sport.

"I have moved well in the first couple of matches, it hasn't affected me. I have been getting good practices in and it feels good. Hopefully it stays that way.

"It's been a good start, hopefully I can keep it going."

Joining Murray in the third round is fellow Brit Johanna Konta, who also won on Centre Court on Wednesday, beating Croatia's Donna Vekic 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 10-8 in a thrilling encounter that lasted three hours and 10 minutes.

Both Konta and Vekic hung on tenaciously during a marathon third set, but Konta held off a break point in the 17th game before finally clinching one of her own in the next to seal a memorable victory.

"The crowd were incredible, the amount of respect they showed opponent as well. The arena is one of the best in the world," she said afterwards.
