Wozniacki mounts stunning comeback to beat Halep

Sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki put pay to Simona Halep's hopes of becoming the new World No 1 by defeating her in three sets at the Aegon International Eastbourne.

With the tournament playing catch-up following several days of rain delays, both Wozniacki and Halep had to come through third-round matches earlier in the day before returning to contest the quarter-finals in the evening.

Halep had done superbly to battle back from a set and a break down to defeat Tsvetana Pironkova, while Wozniacki enjoyed a much easier ride against Elena Vesnina, dropping just three games on the way to victory.

The Dane drew first blood in the quarter-final, racing to a 5-2 lead, only for Halep to go on a five-game winning streak and snatch the first set 7-5.

Halep looked well on course for victory after going two breaks up in the second set, but incredibly the Romanian let it slip from there.

Wozniacki won 12 of the last 14 games to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, leaving her opponent shell shocked.

“It was tough because I was ahead in the first set, kind of had her in the defense and running, then all of a sudden every time I put her in a corner she managed to find a way out of it,” Wozniacki said after the match.

“She came out with some amazing shots and I lost the first set, and she had the momentum in the second. But I kept grinding and kept digging in there and somehow managed to turn it around.”

Next up for Wozniacki is local favourite Heather Watson, who continued her stellar run 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Barbora Strycova.

The second semi-final sees third seed Karolina Pliskova take on another Brit, fifth seed Johanna Konta.

Pliskova edged Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 6-4, while Konta eliminated top seed Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4 – much to the delight of the fans in Eastbourne.
