Djokovic pulls out of Madrid Open

However, Djokovic is scheduled to return at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia tournament in Rome, which gets underway on May 10.

"The Serbian announced that he will not compete at the Caja Magica and will take a period of rest before continuing his planned schedule at the tournaments in Rome and Roland Garros," the tournament organisers said in a statement on Wednesday.

This is the second successive year that Djokovic has missed the Madrid Open as he did not play in 2014 due to a wrist injury.

Prior to this event, the 27-year-old has been in red-hot form as he triumphed at the Australian Open before going on to win in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo.
