Federer makes light work of Sugita in Halle

Roger Federer wasted no time in knocking Yuichi Sugita out of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle on Tuesday.

After opting to skip the clay court season and then losing to Tommy Haas in his first match at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart last week, Federer has plenty to prove over the next few days in Halle.

And the Swiss star has started on the right foot.

He was extremely sharp against Sugita as he won 6-3, 6-1 in under an hour.

The movement was far more fluid than it was against Haas last week and the groundstrokes were hit with far more decisiveness.

Federer’s serve also seems to be in a good way but he will be frustrated that he allowed his Japanese opponent to break him when the match had all but been decided.

The match was Federer’s 1100th on the ATP tour – quite some achievement for the 35-year-old.
