Ostapenko seals fairytale Roland Garros title

Unseeded Jelena Ostapenko completed a fairytale win at Roland Garros after a remarkable comeback to beat favourite Simona Halep.

Ostapenko triumphed 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to become the first player in 20 years to win their first tour title at a Grand Slam, and the first Latvian to triumph at Roland Garros.

“I mean I can’t believe I’m champion at 20,” said Ostapenko.

“I knew that Gustavo Kuerten won his first Roland Garros the day I was born, I have no words.

“There were a couple of games when everything went my way and I was ready to fight for every point.”

The powerful hitting which has been a characteristic of the world number 47’s game throughout the tournament was evident from the off.

However, the 20-year-old was also guilty of a succession of mistakes during the first set after clocking 23 unforced errors, as four of the opening six games went against serve.

Halep eventually held her serve to take a 5-4 lead, before the pressure told on Ostapenko as she allowed the Romanian to break for the set.

World number three Halep appeared on course for the title when she took the momentum into the second set and built up a quick 3-0 lead.

But Ostapenko displayed the same grit that was on show in her quarter final fightback against Elina Svitolina, as she won four successive games before claiming the set with a forehand winner.

It was neck-and-neck between the pair in the final set, before Ostapenko’s 50th winner of the match saw her take a 5-3 lead.

Serving to stay in the match, Halep folded, as Ostapenko claimed the match with a clean winner on her return.
