Ostapenko, Bacsinszky reach Roland Garros semis

Latvian Jelena Ostapenko defeated former world number one Caroline Wozniacki to reach the women’s singles semi-finals at Roland Garros in a rain-delayed match on Tuesday.

The world number 47 came back after losing the first set to hammer her Danish 11th-seeded opponent 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Court Suzanne Lenglen in a match that was interrupted three times by rain.

In only her second time playing at Roland Garros, the 19-year-old became the first teenager since Ana Ivanovic in 2007 to reach the semi-finals on Paris.

In the first set, Ostapenko dropped her serve twice in succession to be 0-5 down but fought back to eventually lose the opening set 6-4.

But in the next two sets, she took control of the match with a dominant display claiming Wozniacki's serve five times to run out the winner claiming the last two sets 6-2, 6-2 in a match lasting one hour and 58 minutes.

She will next be up against 30th-seeded Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland, who caused an upset when beating French 13th seed Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-4, in the other quarter-final clash on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

In an opening set where there were five service breaks, Bacsinszky served out the set to eventually claim it 6-4.

Mladenovic upped her game early on in the next set to break Bacsinszky's serve to lead 3-1.

The fight was effectively knocked out of the Frenchwoman when the Swiss broke serve in the fifth and seventh games, going on to serve out the set and match 6-4, claiming it on her first match point.
