Wawrinka advances, Nishikori made to wait

Third seed Stan Wawrinka defeated Fabio Fognini in straight sets at Roland Garros on Saturday, while Kei Nishikori's match with Chung Hyeon was interrupted by rain.

Wawrinka, a champion in Paris two weeks ago, survived a tough opening set against Fognini before running away with it in the second and third for a 7-6 (7-2), 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Fognini will be kicking himself after feeling he had his chances in the first set.

The Italian was a break up, serving for the opening set at 6-5, but failed to convert three set points, allowing Wawrinka to force a tie-break.

The World No 29 then smashed an overhead into the net to hand Wawrinka a 5-2 lead – much to his own frustration – with the Swiss converting a set point soon after.

Fognini's disappointment was evident and his challenge quickly faltered. He dropped his opening two service games of the second set and Wawrinka never looked back, winning 12 of the last 14 games.

The Italian also appeared to be struggling with a knee injury, calling for a trainer at one point while 0-3 down.

Fognini did earn three break points midway through the third set as he threatened to get back on level terms, but he couldn't convert any of them.

Wawrinka stood firm and the writing was on the wall when he clinched his second break of the set for a 5-2 lead.

The Swiss squandered two match points but made no mistake with his third as his booked his place in the last 16.

Earlier in the day, World No 1 Andy Murray defeated Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets, while Kevin Anderson and Marin Cilic also secured third-round victories.

Three matches were suspended due to rain and were eventually called off for the day. They will resume on Sunday.

Eighth seed Kei Nishikori currently finds himself in a real battle with Korean Chung Hyeon.

The Japanese star looked well on course for victory after going two sets up, but World No 67 Chung hit back to win the third in a tie-break before breaking Nishikori's serve twice in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

The match will resume with Nishokiri needing to dig himself out of a massive hole in the fourth set, or face a winner-take-all decider.
