Halep was beaten 6-7 (6-8), 3-6 by Alize Cornet and will be determined to bounce back from that loss when she faces Alison Riske in the second round of the Rome Masters.
Halep admitted that being knocked out in the first round in Madrid was a bitter pill to swallow, but added that she needs to gain as much match practice on clay as she can prior to the French Open.
"I had some problems last week in Madrid, but I'm feeling happy with my game again now," she told the official WTA site. "I am hoping to have some more matches on clay – I still need some matches to reach my highest level. I'll need to fight this week, because right now I'm a little bit far away from where I want to be.
"I'm just going to take it match by match, though, because every player is playing well.
