Thiem and Zverev march on in Barcelona

Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev advanced to the second round of the Barcelona Open while Yuichi Sugita caused an upset on Tuesday.

Thiem eased past rising star Kyle Edmund 6-1, 6-4 in 81 minute on the clay courts of the Spanish city.

The fourth seed battled up front, saving two break points in his opening service game but calmed the nerves by breaking and consolidating to go 4-1 up.

A further break would but the Austrian in a commanding position and he served out the first set in style.,

The second set saw Thiem save another break point early on before breaking to go 4-2 up. Edmund would have multiple opportunities to break back but he would squander them all as Thiem cruised to an easy win.

Meanwhile, Zverev used all of his nearly two metre frame in his three set win over Nicolas Almagro. The German survived a second set comeback to win 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4 in a marathon two and half hour match.

Finally, Japanese star Sugita earned one of the biggest wins of his career when he knocked out ninth seed Richard Gasquet.

The world number 91 came back from a set down to defeat the veteran Frenchman 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) in a nail-biting affair where Gasquet saved four match points.
